French women make it look so easy. They have a certain “je ne sais quio”, making them effortlessly beautiful, yet so chic and refined. So how do French women do it?
1. Beauty should be pleasurable
Most American women believe in the idea of “no pain, no gain”, and that they have to suffer to be beautiful. French women, au contraire, live by the “pleasure principle” , taking pleasure in everything they do. French women believe that your beauty routine should be luxurious and make you feel as good as it makes you look.
2. Choose only the best
When it comes to beauty products (and food), French women use only the best. They value quality over quantity.
3. Less is more
French women make “done-but-not-done” look so fabulously chic. They don’t like to wear a lot of makeup, so they focus on protecting their skin instead of covering up flaws. French women think “skin first, makeup second”.
To master the French no-makeup look, emphasize just one feature at a time. For example, if you are going to wear a bold lip color, keep your eye makeup very simple and natural-looking.
4. Prevention is key
As a French woman, you are never too young to start taking great care of yourself. French women treat their skin, hair, and body as best as they can so they don’t have to do much to look their best, setting them up for a lifetime of minimal beauty maintenance.
5. Your beauty routine should include your neck and décolletage
For the French, your “face” includes everything from the top of your forehead to your décolletage. Proper skincare includes the face, neck, and décolletage, and you should use the same beauty products (especially sunblock) on all of these areas.
6. Professional beauty treatments are a necessity, not a luxury.
French women get facials as often as American women get manicures because the French believe that professional treatments are a necessary part of a skin care regimen. When French girls turn 13, they have their first visit to an aesthetician to learn how to take care of their skin.
7. Drink Wine
French women drink wine every day. Wine contains polyphenols and the powerful antioxidant resveratrol, which fights the free radical damage that causes premature aging.
Wine is also anti-inflammatory and improves circulation, giving your skin a natural glow. As I like to say, “a glass of wine a day keeps the wrinkles away!”
8. Wear Red Lipstick
French women are all about making a statement with red lipstick. When you wear a bold red lipstick, you can keep the rest of your makeup simple and you hair messy. Then all you need to do is throw on a pair of jeans and high heels and you will look oh-so-French, and oh-so-good!
For the French, how you feel about yourself is more important than how you look because confidence is the sexiest thing you can wear.
