Fall is finally here which means it’s the time of the year to get obsessed with pumpkin spiced everything! But did you know that this seasonal sensation is also a nutritionally dense superfood for your skin?
October’s favorite fall fruit (I totally thought it was a vegetable, thanks Google!) is packed with vitamins, minerals, and fruit enzymes necessary for healthy, vibrant skin. Pumpkin is rich in the most important “youth vitamins” for fighting skin aging: Vitamins A, C and E.
Pumpkins are orange because they contain a high amount of beta-carotene, a compound that the body converts to Vitamin A. In fact, pumpkins contain more beta-carotene than any other fruit!
Vitamin A is essential for healthy tissue generation and plays a major role in the formation of collagen and elastin fibers, keeping our skin firm but supple. Vitamin A also acts as an antioxidant and helps to protect the skin from damage from UV radiation.
Vitamin C is another powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from damage but as we age, Vitamin C levels in the skin decline. Eaten or applied topically, the Vitamin C in pumpkin protects the skin from UV and environmental damage and can further increase collagen production.
Vitamin E is one of the main healing and nourishing skin vitamins. Vitamin E keeps the skin hydrated, supports new skin cell growth, and boosts collagen production. Vitamin E also acts as an anti-inflammatory to soothe and calm irritated and sensitive skin.
As if that weren’t enough, pumpkins also contain the skin-friendly minerals zinc (speeds wound healing and protects against UV damage), potassium (hydrates dry skin), copper (helps form collagen), iron (gives the skin a healthy glow), and magnesium (fights fine lines and wrinkles).
Pumpkin’s fruit enzymes act like alpha hydroxy acids, sloughing off dead skin cells to reveal softer and glowing skin underneath while increasing the speed of new skin cell renewal.
