Overview
Causes
Hyperhidrosis can be classified into two types – primary hyperhidrosis and secondary hyperhidrosis – depending on the underlying cause for the sweating. At U Med Spa, we treat primary hyperhidosis which is the more common type. Primary hyperhidrosis typically affects underarms, palms, and the soles of our feet.
In primary hyperhidrosis:
- The excessive sweating is not triggered by temperature or physical activity
- It usually begins in childhood or adolescence
- It is typically genetic – runs in the family
- Sweat glands are structurally normal but are overstimulated
Symptoms
Symptoms of primary hyperhidrosis include:
- Visible, excessive sweating in specific areas, such as underarms, palms, soles of the feet, face, or scalp
- Sweating occurs on both sides of the body, fairly symmetrically (e.g., both underarms, both hands)
- Episodes happen at least once a week, often without a clear trigger
- Sweating begins during childhood or adolescence
- Does not typically occur during sleep
- Interferes with daily activities, such as soaking through clothes, struggling to grip pens or steering wheels, and avoiding handshakes
- Family history is often present, suggesting a genetic link
Treatment Options
Botox treatments
You may know Botox for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. When injected into the sweat glands, Botox inhibits the neural signals that signal the sweat glands to produce sweat reducing the sweat production. Similar to other Botox treatments, total treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and the results last 3-5 months.
Botox treatments
While Botox is only FDA-approved to treat hyperhidrosis in the armpits, it can be used “off-label” to treat excessive sweating in palms of your hands. Similar to other Botox treatments, total treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and the results last 3-5 months.
