Causes & Symptoms
Causes of fine lines & wrinkles
Collagen and elastin are proteins in our skin that provide structure and elasticity. While fine lines and wrinkles may not be visible until our 30s, we begin to lose about 1.0% of collagen per year after the age of 20.
Reduction in these proteins makes our skin less elastic, drier, and thinner, leading to sagging skin and the formation of wrinkles over time
Causes of fine lines and wrinkles include:
- Aging
- UV rays
- Facial expressions
- Stress
- Sleep positions
- Smoking
Symptoms of fine lines & wrinkles
You may notice the following symptoms:
- Wrinkles on your forehead
- Wrinkles on the corners of your eyes
- Vertical lines between your eye brows
- Lines above your lips
- Folds around your mouth such as Smile lines and Marionette lines
- Lines on your neck
Treatments by Type
Dynamic wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles are the wrinkles that form when you are making facial expressions. Wrinkle relaxers such as Botox and Dysport limit the dynamics of your muscles, preventing you from making deep facial movements that form these wrinkles. With consistent treatments by experienced providers, you can smooth these dynamic wrinkles while still being able to express yourself.
Fine lines

Microneedling, also known as the collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses thin needles to puncture the top layer of the skin. As the skin heals, it naturally creates collagen and elastin. Production of collagen and elastin helps smooth fine lines, even skin texture, and reduce acne scars.

Moxi is a non-ablative laser treatment ideal for patients who are looking for a powerful laser treatment with minimal downtime. Moxi laser treats early signs of aging including fine lines, pigmentation, and enlarged pores.
Deep static lines

CO2 laser is a powerful skin resurfacing treatment that removes the epidermis and heats the dermis to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin. Co2 laser targets fine lines and wrinkles, reduces acne scars and blemishes, and deep pigmentations.
Co2 Resurfacing Laser is more powerful than Microneedling and Moxi laser but comes with 7-10 days of downtime.
Folds

Folds are the deep wrinkles around our mouth such as smile lines and marionette lines. These form primarily due to volume loss. Dermal fillers are FDA-approved injectable treatment that instantly restores volume and softens these folds.

Sculptra is an FDA-approved biostimulator. It is injected into your fat pads to boost collagen and elastin. Sculptra gradually restores facial volume, strengthens your skin, and makes your skin tighter.
FAQs
Q
What is the difference between "dynamic" and "static" wrinkles?
A
Understanding the difference is key to choosing the right treatment. Dynamic wrinkles appear when you move your face (like crowâs feet when you smile or forehead lines when you look surprised). These are best treated with Botox or Dysport. Static wrinkles are the lines that remain visible even when your face is at rest. These are better addressed with skin-resurfacing treatments like CO2 Laser or Microneedling to rebuild the skin’s structure
Q
I have deep "folds" around my mouth. Why do you recommend filler or Sculptra instead of Botox?
A
Folds, like the nasolabial folds (smile lines), are usually caused by a loss of volume in the cheeks and midface rather than muscle movement. Dermal fillers provide immediate volume to “fill” the fold, while Sculptra acts as a biostimulator to regrow your own collagen over time. Botox is designed to relax muscles, so it wonât provide the structural lift needed to soften deep folds
Q
Can I treat fine lines and deep wrinkles at the same time?
A
Absolutely. In fact, we often recommend a “multimodal” approach. For example, we might use Botox to relax dynamic movement, Filler to restore lost volume in deep creases, and SkinPen Microneedling to improve the overall texture and fine lines on the skin’s surface. Combining treatments often leads to the most natural-looking, comprehensive rejuvenation
Q
When should I choose the CO2 Laser over Microneedling?
A
Both treatments stimulate collagen, but the DEKA DOT CO2 Laser is much more powerful. If you have mild fine lines and want minimal downtime, Microneedling is an excellent choice. However, if you have deep, etched-in static wrinkles or significant sun damage, the CO2 Laser provides deeper resurfacing and more dramatic skin tightening in fewer sessions
Q
Will these treatments make me look "overdone" or frozen?
A
Our goal at U Med is always a natural, refreshed appearance. By using a combination of treatments – addressing volume with Sculptra, movement with Botox or Dysport, and texture with lasers – we avoid the “overfilled” look. We focus on restoring what has been lost over time rather than changing your fundamental facial structure
Q
How long will it take to see a reduction in my wrinkles?
A
Results vary by treatment:
- Botox and Dysport: visible in 3â7 days
- Filler: immediate results
- Sculptra: results appear gradually over 3â6 months as your body produces new collagen
- CO2 Laser & Microneedling: you will see fresh skin within 7 days, with continued tightening over several months

U Med approach
At U Med Spa, we believe the most effective way to soften fine lines and wrinkles is through a strategic, multi-modality approach. By pairing neuromodulators like Botox to relax expression lines with collagen-stimulating treatments like SkinPen or Moxi Laser, we treat both the cause and the visible symptoms of skin aging.
During your consultation, we design a customized plan tailored to you. This comprehensive treatment ensures that we aren’t just “filling” lines, but actively regenerating your skinâs foundation for a smoother, naturally youthful appearance that lasts.
