How do I restore facial volume?

Loss of facial volume is one of the biggest concerns that we treat at U Med Spa. While it’s always been a key concern for our patients, we’ve certainly seen an increase in inquiries since weight loss programs with semaglutide and tirzepatide became more popular. These weight loss programs helped people lose unwanted fat, but they also caused volume loss in other areas such as cheeks, undereye area, and temples where our patients wanted to maintain volume.

What causes volume loss naturally?

When we are young, our faces are healthy, full, smooth, and tight. All the good things. As we approach our 30s, we begin to lose collagen and elastin making our skin less healthy, thinner, and looser. In the meantime, the fat pads that support the top layer of our skin begin to atrophy causing our skin to sag. This creates more wrinkles around our face and forms deeper folds such as smile lines and marionette lines. We also experience more hollowness under our eyes as we age because our undereye area loses support from our cheeks.

How can you treat volume loss?

There are multiple ways that we can address volume loss. We typically use a combination of dermal fillers and biostimulators such as Sculptra and PRF EZ Gel.

Dermal filler

Dermal filler is an FDA-approved cosmetic injectable treatment that instantly restores facial volume and softens wrinkles in areas that have deflated with age. Treatment typically takes 1-2 hours including a full face assessment and consultation. Results are immediate and last up to 12 months, but you may experience some bruising and swelling for up to 2 weeks.

Sculptra

Sculptra is an FDA-approved biostimulator. Our providers describe it as a “401k for your skin” because it is injected into your fat pads to boost collagen and elastin. Sculptra restores facial volume, strengthens your skin, and makes your skin tighter. Results take a couple of months to show as it takes time to build collagen and elastin gradually, but can last up to 12 months. Treatment typically takes multiple sessions initially with each spaced out by 4-6 weeks. After the initial set of sessions, you will need fewer treatments to maintain annually.

PRF EZ Gel

PRF EZ Gel is a natural and regenerative bio-stimulating filler made with protein and growth factors from your own blood. PRF EZ Gel treatment stimulates collagen production, strengthens your skin, and gradually restores facial volume. Unlike Sculptra, which is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), PRF EZ Gel is 100% made of growth factors from your own blood. It is great for those who want natural options, but results are less consistent compared to Sculptra or Dermal Filler because they can depend on the health or quality of your blood. Treatment requires multiple sessions to produce meaningful results. We typically recommend 3 sessions, spaced out by 4-6 weeks.
