How Kybella works
Kybella uses a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When injected into the area beneath the chin, it targets and permanently destroys the membranes of fat cells so they can no longer store or accumulate volume
Over the following weeks, your body’s lymphatic system naturally clears away the cellular debris. Because these specific cells are gone for good, the treatment provides a permanent reduction in your “double chin” and a more defined, sculpted jawline

How many treatments will I need?
A
Number of treatments and the amount of product required depends on your personalized treatment plan. Patients on average require 3 treatments and up to 6 treatment. Each treatment is at least 1 month apart

When will I see the results?

You will begin to notice your results after your second treatment. Results are not immediate and will continue to improve after the first month. It will take up to 6 months to see the full result

A
Results from Kybella are permanent. Kybella permanently destroys the fat cells underneath your chin. Once destroyed, they can not retain store or accumulate fat. After you complete all of your treatments according to your treatment plan, you will not need further treatments

Is Kybella permanent?

Yes! Because Kybella destroys the fat cells themselves, the results are considered permanent. Once you reach your desired aesthetic goal, further treatment is not expected. However, it is important to maintain a stable weight, as remaining fat cells in the area can still expand if significant weight is gained.

What is the "social downtime" for Kybella?
A
While Kybella is non-surgical, it does come with a unique recovery phase often called the “bullfrog effect” which describes the swelling after the treatment
Significant swelling under the chin is very common and usually peaks 24 to 48 hours after injection. This is actually a good sign – it means the acid is actively breaking down fat!
Most swelling subsides within a week, though mild firmness or numbness can persist for a few weeks. Many patients choose to wear scarves or schedule their appointments toward the end of the work week

Are Kybella treatments painful?
A
The injections involve multiple small pinpricks under the chin. Most patients experience a warm, stinging, or burning sensation immediately after the injection, which typically lasts for about 15 minutes. To keep you comfortable, your provider may use topical numbing cream, injectable local anesthetic (lidocaine), and ice packs before and after the treatment

Is Kybella safe?
A
KYBELLA is an FDA-approved treatment and is generally considered to be safe for patients. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. There is a small risk of nerve damage that may result in a lopsided smile or difficulty swallowing which is generally naturally healed over time. Our providers will always go through risks and concerns related to every treatment during the consultation to keep you informed

Contraindications
You may not be a candidate for Kybella if you have the following conditions:
— Pregnant or breastfeeding
— Active infection in the treatment area(s)
— History or plan for facial surgery in the treatment area
— Infection or medical condition involving the submental area
Before the appointment
Before your Kybella treatment, avoid taking blood-thinning medications such as Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Fish oil, Ginko Biloba, St. John’s Wort and high doses of vitamin E for 7 days prior to procedure, as these may cause increase risk of bleeding and bruising. Regular multi-vitamin and Tylenol® is permitted (If not contraindicated)
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to procedure as this can increase the risk for bleeding and bruising
You may take Tylenol® (if not contraindicated) one hour before your Kybella appointment to ease your anxiety and discomfort if you have any concerns
Avoid dental procedures (including cleaning) 2 weeks pre Kybella and 2 weeks post Kybella
After the appointment
Bruising and swelling is common after the Kybella treatment, especially for the first 24-48 hours, and can last up to 2 weeks
Apply compression chin strap for the first 24 hours and as much as possible for the first week to reduce swelling
You may take Tylenol (if not contraindicated) to help with any discomfort
Avoid makeup for at least 4 hours to avoid any chance of infection
Avoid touching / rubbing the treated area(s) the day of treatment
Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours to prevent moving the injectable or increasing blood flow to the face
Avoid dental procedure (including cleaning) 2 weeks post Kybella
