FAQs
Q
Does microneedling hurt?
A
The technique may sound daunting for some, but it is a relatively simple procedure that does not involve much pain. We provide topical numbing 30 minutes prior to the treatment so most patients only feel mild sensitivity during and after the treatment
Q
When do I begin to notice results from microneedling?
A
Microneedling works by stimulating our natural collagen and elastin so the results can be slow acting but long lasting. Most patients notice brightening, tightening, and a more even skin texture about one to two weeks after their first session. For those who wish to treat deeper imperfections such as acne scars, results can be subtler, and additional treatments are usually required. We typically recommend an initial package of 3 sessions (spaced out by 4 – 6 weeks) to help patients realize optimal results. After the initial 3 sessions, microneedling can be done once every quarter for maintenance
Q
What makes SkinPen different from other microneedling tools?
A
Not all microneedling is created equal. SkinPen stands out because:
- FDA-Cleared: It has undergone rigorous safety and efficacy testing. Safety & Hygiene: It uses sterile, single-use needle cartridges and a “BioSheath” to prevent cross-contamination
- Precision: The needle depth is adjustable, allowing your provider to treat delicate areas (like around the eyes) and tougher areas (like acne scars on the cheeks) with total accuracy
- No Tearing: Unlike “dermarollers” which can tear the skin as they roll, SkinPen needles move vertically in and out for a clean, surgical-grade puncture.
Q
What should I expect from my microneedling treatment?
A
You will begin to notice a brighter and more even skin about one to two week after your first session but full results will not show until 4-6 weeks later because it takes time for our skin to naturally produce collagen and elastin. We recommend getting at least 3 sessions, spaced out by 4-6 weeks, which magnifies the collagen production over the 3-4 month period
Q
What concerns does SkinPen Microneedling address?
A
SkinPen is highly effective for a wide range of skin concerns, including facial acne scars (clinically proven to improve their appearance), fine lines and wrinkles (especially on the face and neck), enlarge pores, uneven skin texture and tone, and stretch marks (on the body)
Q
How long does microneedling last?
A
Results from microneedling can last 3 – 5 months. Depending on your skincare concerns, we typically recommend an initial package of 3 sessions (spaced out by 4 – 6 weeks) to help patients realize optimal results and then quarterly maintenance thereafter
Q
Will my skin purge after microneedling?
A
Unfortunately, skin purging is unavoidable after any intensive skincare treatments with medical-grade products. It just means that the treatments are working! These treatments exfoliate your skin and increases natural cell turnover which also means that any blockages that were already beneath your skin would come to the surface. Your skin may temporarily get worse before it gets better. If you have important events coming up and your skin is acne prone, you may want to hold off on the treatment till after the events
Q
What is the downtime for SkinPen microneedling?
A
The downtime is minimal, making it a “weekend recovery” favorite:
Day 1: The skin will look like a moderate sunburn (red and slightly swollen)
Day 2: Redness fades to a light pink. You may feel some dryness or tightness
Day 3: Most redness is gone, and you can typically return to wearing makeup
Note: Avoid strenuous exercise and sweating for the first 24–48 hours to prevent irritation of the micro-channels
