Preventative skincare – or prejuvenation – has become one of the hottest buzz words in aesthetics. More than ever, people are focused on preventing the aging process rather than reversing its symptoms once they have already set in. At U Med Spa in the Plano and Frisco area, we are seeing more young patients – those in their mid twenties to early thirties – coming in for preventative skin treatments such as microneedling and Moxi laser to help maintain the health and quality of their skin.
What makes our skin age?

Before discussing preventative skincare or prejuvenation, it’s important to understand how our skin ages. Primary causes of our skin aging include the loss of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, sun exposure (“photoaging”), and other environmental factors such as pollution.
Collagen and elastin are the building blocks of youthful skin – they provide structure, firmness, and elasticity. We begin to lose 1% of our collagen each year since our mid-twenties, and we stop producing elastin after puberty. The decline of these two proteins causes skin laxity, fine lines, and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acids are molecules that keep our skin hydrated and smooth, giving it plump and supple appearance. As we age, our skin produces fewer hyaluronic acids. By the time we reach our fifties, we only produce roughly half as much as we did in our twenties.
Photoaging is caused by UV exposure. UVB rays cause sun burn – they primarily affect us when we are outdoors. UVA rays penetrate our skin deeper than UVB rays and can reach us even when we are indoors or inside our cars. These rays penetrate deep into our skin cells and damage the collagen and elastin fibers accelerating skin aging. Over time, increased sun exposure leads to hyperpigmentation and thinner skin. Best way to protect our skin from photoaging is to apply and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. Learn more in our ultimate guide to sun protection here.
Other environmental factors, such as airborne microparticles, can cause oxidative stress and inflammation, further contributing to hyperpigmentation and premature skin aging.
What is preventative skincare or prejuvenation?
Preventative skincare or prejuvenation means proactively investing in skin treatments to maintain healthy and radiant skin rather than waiting to reverse the damage later. Patients in their 20s and 30s are now starting quarterly skin treatments such as microneedling, chemical peels, BBL Photofacial, or Moxi laser to stimulate collagen and elastin, reduce sun damage, and increase cell turnover. Prejuvenation helps patients protect their investments in the long run by delaying the need for more invasive procedures down the road.
Why is Moxi laser the most popular prejuvenation laser?
Moxi laser has quickly become one of the most popular prejuvenation treatments at U Med Spa in Plano, TX.
- Quick & tolerable treatment: Often called the “lunchtime laser”, Moxi laser is a quick and comfortable treatment for busy patients. We apply a topical numbing cream for 30 minutes, and the treatment itself only takes 15 minutes for the face or up to 30 minutes if you add on areas such as neck, chest, or arms. During the treatment, we provide a handheld fan or a cooling device to balance the heat from the laser. For anxious patients, Pro-nox (a self-administered nitrous oxide system) is available, though most patients tolerate the treatment without it. After the treatment, we provide a pos- procedural cooling mask for patients to take home. This helps reduce surface temperature, making recovery faster and more comfortable
- Minimal downtime: Compared other laser treatments, Moxi laser is non-ablative, gentle, and requires minimal downtime. Your skin may appear slightly red, swollen, and mildly swollen on the day of treatment and feel rough or “sandy” for the next 4-7 days as it renews. If redness persists the next day, makeup can be applied safely. Most patients resume normal daily activities immediately. Learn about day-by-day Moxi healing process here
- Delays premature signs of aging: Moxi uses non-ablative, fractional laser energy to gently resurface the top layer of our skin and jump-start collagen and elastin production. Moxi laser is designed to target early signs of aging such as dullness, uneven tone, rough texture, and fine lines. It is ideal for patients who are looking to “polish” their skin for a clean, makeup-optional look. With a series of three treatments, you will notice brighter, smoother, and more refined skin
- Safe for all skin tones: Unlike some laser treatments that are limited to lighter skin tones, the Moxi laser is safe for all skin tones and types – including those with melasma-prone skin. In fact, with a series of treatments, Moxi can safely help improve melasma and pigmentation over time
