How Sculptra works
Unlike traditional fillers that provide instant volume, Sculptra works as a “biostimulator” by utilizing poly-L-lactic acid to trigger your body’s natural collagen production. Is Sculptra safe?
A
Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable and has been used globally used since 1999. Sculptra is made of a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid that is absorbed naturally by the body. Similar to dermal fillers, most common side effects for Sculptra include injection site pain, redness, bruising, tenderness, itching and lumps, bleeding, and swelling. In some instances, patients have reported feeling small lumps underneath the skin when pressed though these complications are extremely rare. Our providers will always go through risks and concerns related to every treatment during the consultation to keep you informed

How does Sculptra differ from dermal fillers like Juvéderm?
A
The main difference lies in the mechanism and duration
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) based dermal fillers provide immediate results by physically plumping and shaping the area. They typically last 6 to 12 months
Sculptra stimulates your body to grow its own collagen. Results appear gradually but are much longer-lasting, often staying visible for up to two years

How many treatments will I need?
A
We typically recommend one vial per decade of life meaning someone in their 40’s would need 4 vials of Sculptra to see optimal results. On average, patients would need 2 – 6 vials in their initial treatment plan depending on their skin and their age

When will I see the results?
A
Immediately post treatment, you will notice your face being a little swollen. A day or two later, the swelling will go away, and you will just look like your normal self. Most patients begin to notice a “Sculptra Glow” in as little 4-6 weeks. Peak results will be in 3-5 months when you will notice increased volume and tightness

How long do Sculptra results last?
A
Clinical studies show that results can last up to 2 years. We typically recommend annual maintenance with smaller dosage after your initial treatment plan

What areas can you treat with Sculptra?
A
Sculptra is primarily used to treat deep folds, wrinkles, and hollow areas of the face, including nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines (lines framing the mouth), sunken cheeks, temple hollowing, chin wrinkles
Sculptra cannot be used in the lips or the immediate under-eye area, as the skin there is too thin for PLLA

What is the "5-5-5 Rule" with Sculptra?
A
To ensure the product is distributed evenly and to prevent the formation of small bumps (nodules), providers recommend the 5-5-5 rule:
- Massage the treated area for 5 minutes
- 5 times a day
- For 5 days after treatment

Contraindications
You may not be a candidate for Sculptra if you have the following conditions:
— Pregnant or breastfeeding
— Active infection in the treatment area(s)
— Allergy to lidocaine
— Any dental procedure or vaccines before and after 2 weeks of appointment
— Any antibiotics 2 weeks before the appointment
— History of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
Before the appointment
Before your Sculptra treatment, avoid taking blood-thinning medications such as Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Fish oil, Ginko Biloba, St. John’s Wort and high doses of vitamin E for 7 days prior to procedure, as these may cause increase risk of bleeding and bruising. Regular multi-vitamin and Tylenol® is permitted (If not contraindicated)
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to procedure as this can increase the risk for bleeding and bruising
You may take Tylenol® (if not contraindicated) one hour before your appointment to ease your anxiety and discomfort if you have any concerns
Avoid dental procedures (including cleaning) 2 weeks pre Sculptra and 2 weeks post Sculptra
After the appointment
Massage the treated area to evenly distribute Sculptra. A good rule of thumb is 5-5-5: massage the injected area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days in a row. This is a must to achieve optimal results!
Bruising and swelling is common after the treatment, especially for the first 24-48 hours, and can last up to 2 weeks
You may apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and take Tylenol (if not contraindicated) to help with any discomfort
Avoid makeup for at least 4 hours to avoid any chance of infection
Avoid touching / rubbing the treated area(s) the day of treatment
Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours to prevent moving the injectable or increasing blood flow to the face
Avoid dental procedure (including cleaning) 2 weeks post Sculptra
