If you’ve spent any time on social media aesthetics feeds recently, you’ve likely seen creators showcasing snatched jawlines and smooth neck contours attributed to one procedure: The Nefertiti Lift.
Named after the ancient Egyptian Queen famous for her elegant profile, this non-surgical “Neck Botox” treatment has skyrocketed in popularity. But does it live up to the viral hype, or is social media setting unrealistic expectations?
To get past the online noise, we sat down with our Board Certified Nurse Practitioner, Jessica Rutledge, to discuss the real science, candidacy, dosage, and clinical expectations behind this trending procedure.

The #1 Misconception: What Neck Botox / Nefertiti Lift CANNOT Do
Before booking a consultation, it is vital to clear up the biggest piece of misinformation circulating on social media: Neck Botox does not erase horizontal “tech-neck” lines. “The most common misconception about what neck Botox actually does is that it helps with the horizontal creases on the neck or ‘tech-neck lines,’” explains our Nurse Practitioner. “These lines are created by repetitive downward motion as we look at our phones and laptops. Over time, that constant creasing breaks down collagen. Because these are static skin folds rather than active muscle contractions, we treat them with different modalities – such as dermal fillers or biostimulators – rather than neurotoxins.”
What It Actually Targets
The Nefertiti Lift focuses on the platysma muscle which is a broad, thin sheet of muscle extending from your collarbone up over your jawline.
The platysma acts as a “depressor” muscle, constantly pulling the lower face and jawline downward. By administering targeted micro-injections of Botox along the lower jaw border and vertical neck cords, we relax that downward tension. Releasing the downward pull allows the upward-pulling facial muscles to take over, restoring a sharper jawline contour and softening vertical neck cords.
How We Evaluate Candidates at U Med Spa: The “Eeee” Test
Not everyone with lower-face concerns needs a Nefertiti Lift. During a physical assessment, candidate selection depends heavily on your unique muscle movement and anatomy.
“When evaluating a patient, I always start by asking about their overall goals, concerns, and expectations,” says Jessica, FNP-BC. “During the physical assessment, I look at the strength of their vertical platysmal bands, skin quality, and whether they have downward pull in their lower face. I usually evaluate the muscle by having the patient show their bottom teeth and say ‘eeee’. This movement causes the platysmal bands to pop out so I can measure their strength and determine correct dosing. Because the platysma inserts along the lower jawline, placing neurotoxin along that border neutralizes that downward heaviness – creating the signature Nefertiti effect.”
Typical Dosing
Because muscle volume and tension vary, dosing is customized to your anatomy.
Standard Average: 40 to 60 units of Botox® (covering both the jawline border and vertical neck bands). Individuals with higher muscle mass or pronounced downward pull may require additional units to achieve optimal relaxation.
What Nefertiti Lift Feels Like
Jessica, FNP-BC, notes that “Pain is patient-dependent, but for most people, the injections feel like tiny pinches. It’s very quick and well-tolerated. Interestingly, once the neurotoxin kicks in, patients commonly report feeling an unexpected relief of physical tension or tightness in their neck. Downtime is negligible – just 15 to 20 minutes of mild injection-site redness or swelling, with occasional minor bruising that resolves in a few days.”
How Long Do Results Last?
Patients often ask if Nefertiti Lift or Neck Botox lasts as long as forehead injections. Because the neck is in perpetual motion, the timeline differs slightly:
- Onset: Initial smoothing begins within 5 to 7 days.
- Peak Results: Full effect is visible at the 2-week mark.
- Longevity: Results typically last 3 to 4 months.
“It can be normal for neck Botox to wear off slightly sooner than upper-face treatments simply because of constant neck movement throughout the day,” explains our NP. “Talking, turning your head, and looking down continuously work those muscles.”
Anatomical Safety: Why Provider Choice Matters
The neck houses vital muscles responsible for swallowing, speaking, and head support. Ensuring safety requires precision, correct depth, and thorough anatomical mastery. “Picking an experienced provider is key to achieving optimal results,” stresses our NP. “You need a trained medical professional who respects neck anatomy – knowing precisely how to isolate the superficial platysmal bands, maintain the correct placement depth, and avoid deeper structures that could cause unwanted neck weakness or difficulty swallowing.”
At U Med Spa in Plano, Frisco, and Allen, our providers bring years of education and experience in facial anatomy and advanced injectable techniques.
Treatment Combinations for Maximum Results
For comprehensive lower-face rejuvenation, our clinic frequently pairs the Nefertiti Lift with complementary treatments. “If a patient experiences volume loss or skin laxity alongside muscle pull, I love pairing the Nefertiti Lift with a biostimulator like Sculptra® or Radiesse®,” shares our NP. “And if they want maximum overall lift, we combine it with facial balancing using dermal fillers in the cheeks, jawline, or chin to restore structural support.”
